On his first appearance in Malaysia at the Sepang track the Dutchmen took another World Championship point when he crossed the finish line in 15th spot. In extreme heat Covena kept his head cool and worked his way up from 22nd to 15th in a race that was ridden in temperatures above 40 degrees.
The Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres rider started the first free practice with a crash due to a technical problem on the bike. This sett him back in the early stages of the weekend where track familiarization was import. To take the positive from it Covena set the record to be the first rider to crash since the SBK came back to the Malaysian track.
Starting on 22nd place from qualifying Covena was ready to fight with his fellow riders in the Malaysian sun. Steady improving his position in the race the Dutch rider got closer and closer to the points. Allthough the gap in front and behind him was big enough to secure his place in the last laps Covena kept pushing to remain focus.
Tony Covena
"The temperatures this weekend where incredible! I knew it wouldn't be easy, but to finish the race was still a challenge. We had a little crash and after that my progress with the bike was less then expected. To go home with another point after such a long trip we can be happy and work towards Misano.
The next round is at Misano, Italy, on the 22th of June.
