On an overcast and cloudy round 8 of the World Supersport Championshiop, the Intermoto Ponyexpress Team saw rookie rider Tony Covena finish another race on his Kawasaki ZX-6R. Due to raindrops on lap 12 the race direction decided to cancel the race where the Dutchmen brought home 18th place.
In Practice and Qualifying Covena showed great improvement with bike set-up and feeling on track. Only 1 second from the top 10 riders in Free Practice 3 the whole team showed the progress that had been made over the previous sessions.
After maken a good start, Tony found the group that was fighting for 12th place and more World Championship points. As we have seen before the Dutchmen struggles with the pace in the opening laps and fights back strong near the end of the race. With a small gap to his fellow riders on lap 12 Covena was unable to close the gap and had to settle for 18th spot.
Tony Covena - "I am happy about the pace we showed on Saturday morning as this was not far from the experienced World Supersport riders. Too bad that we weren't able to reproduce this in the opening laps of the race as I then would have stayed with the group that was fighting in the points. In the end of the race we are always strong but with the rain pouring down on two-thirds of the race I felt we were able of more then 18th place."
The next race will be hosted on the 7th of September in Jerez after the summer break.
