At the fifth round of the World Supersport Championship Covena finished 17th, just missing out on the points. Although the constant changing weather in Free Practice and Qualifying the young Dutchmen was feeling confident in the wet. As the race was in dry conditions Covena struggled to upen his pace to fight with the group infront.
In mixed conditions the Kawasaki Intermoto Ponyexpres rider started his practice sessions. Even though the tricky conditions Covena was able to set a fast pace and clearly felt comfortable in the wet. For qualifying Covena and his team made some changes to the bike in order to get more feeling on the slippery surface at Donington Park. Almost flying on his first laps Covena opened Qualifying on a staggering pace, placing him in the top-ten for most of the session. Unfortunately a crash at turn7 after four laps stopped his potential and with a fast drying track in the last ten minutes Covena sadly had to watch his top-ten turn into 21th spot.
The race, in comparison to qualifying, was completely dry and sunny. Not the ideal situation as the dry-time on track had been limited to a minimum throughout the weekend.
Getting away with a good start Covena got up to 18th place in the first lap and almost catching the group that was fighting for the points in front of him. When the gap got bigger and the Kawasaki rider got into a battle with Menghi in the opening stages, points where out of the charge. With finishing his fifth World Superport race Covena took a decent 17th place.
Tony Covena
"This weekend was a extreme in terms of weather conditions. For sure this didn't make it easy for us but still we managed to be fast in the wet. It was a pity that I crashed after four laps as I believe that we could have done our best qualifying of the season here. But in the end we finished another race, learned from it and showed that when everything is right we can be fast."
The next race will be at Sepang on the 8th of June. This will be a new track for Tony where again he can show his potential.
